My favorite assignments are the ones where I get the call go make interesting images of a big event - like the NFL Draft. I had been chatting with the folks over at the NYT for a few weeks leading up to the draft and that's exactly what they told me - shoot whatever you see in a way that's different from the rest of the folks.
At big events like this there are dozens of photographers from around the country working for various outlets - I saw a handful of folks from the AP, Getty and USA Today Sports Images which the NYT has access to so I take that as the safety net. There's no way I can compete with an agency that has 5 folks positioned around the stadium with a dedicated editor while I'm shooting and editing solo - so instead of getting the same shots I challenge myself to get something that I don't think any of the wire guys will get - or at least shoot it in a different way.
Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't but I think I came away with a set of images that fit the coverage The New York Times was looking for (lots of Jets and Giants w/ some Bills mixed in) that the other folks didn't have so I'll chalk it up as a win.
